Start of the school Holidays

Well today Oliver with his sister broke up from school today.

This should be an interesting school holiday with lots planned, but first a few days enjoying the sunshine and relaxing is in order.

I am sure I will blog some of our adventures 🙂

Oliver seams happy to be having time off school and being at home in his own environment, I am hoping the change won’t be too much for him or take him too long to settle at being at home.

I think this term had been a long term, lots going on with the class change and end of term exams sometimes the pressure can crept up on you without you knowing.

Still the holidays are looking bright 🙂

That time of year, school reports

A time of year I always wonder and maybe worry a little as it is the true reading of the school year rather than a meeting at school when I am told everything is going well with no proof!

The school report came out yesterday and WOW!

Last years school report was good but Oliver was behind in the levels he should be, but this year he has caught up and is now where he should be and slightly above in maths and science.  The comments he got where also fab, “he gives 100 %” “a delight to have in the class”

With school reports I always want to see they try their best and have the right attitude is good as I believe they can only do the best they can, But this year to have Oliver catch up is amazing. He has worked really hard and all the effort he has put in has been rewarded to another excellent report 🙂

All hard at the moment, Oliver has moved in to his new class with his new teacher as I again I have said in other blogs but rather than calming down for the end of the year things have stepped up for Oliver. He now gets homework 3 nights a week and the homework is getting harder for him and longer.

How do I help him or encourage him without giving him the information so he is still learning?  I have increased the amount he has to read every night and he seams to be coping with that and i also ask him to tell me what he has just read so I know he is starting to understand what he is reading.

When doing handwriting he can do it beautiful, but add a sentence and spelling he struggles, even more so over this week when he has had to learn to put where commas go and where apostrophes  go while writing/coping sentence,  He hasn’t had to make up the sentences but copy them from his homework sheet which again he has struggled with.

Does anyone else have homework problems and how do you deal with them?

As you may have noticed from my other blogs Oliver has difficulty with fine motor, causing problems with his handwriting, using a ruler, and drawing to name a few.   Oliver doesn’t do drawing and if he does it is normally a picture you can’t make out.  But over the weekend while sitting in the garden he was drawing lots of picture and below are two of them.   I was so proud of him and just wanted to share them 🙂

Good Week

A good week this week, 🙂

Oliver has enjoyed his first week with his new teacher this week and seams to be settling with her 🙂  He is still very worried about who his new TA is and won’t find out till September and I think as she is the one who will do the main one to one things with him he has a right to be worried but i am sure it will all be OK in the end.   He should forget about it over the summer and then worry about it and worry about returning to school come the end of the holidays.

We had a meeting on Friday to make sure all was going OK and was shown some fab handwriting Oliver had done that day, amazing he can do it but when you add spelling, sentences and punctuation that is when it becomes messy and hard for him as he has too much information to process and also too much to think about,  However the sentence he did write you could still read it which again is massive for him and us 🙂

He in this week has also tired after school homework club which he loved doing, when I asked him if he could go he said yes then at bed time changed his mind then in the car on the morning changed his mind again and went. I was half expecting a call to say he was upset could I collect him but he stayed and did his reading as he had no other homework he also had his sister there if he needed her.

He has also tired breakfast club, and love it he didn’t eat anything as there as nothing he like but i wasn’t worried about that as he had breakfast before going,  Not sure what he did or who he played with but he had a good time and went another morning too and again like homework club wants to go again.

So all in all lots of new things and lots of positive things 🙂

New Class and more a school

Well the move was Monday!

Oliver came out of school on Monday very happy with his new teacher, he liked her and all seams to have gone well over the last few days.  We just need to see how things go for the next few weeks and also when he goes back in September, with his TA also who will be new to the school.

As going back after such a long time off is always difficult and with a new TA Oliver will have to learn to trust again and learn to talk to them about problems.  He will encounter problems too after being a home for a long time and it will take him time to resettle in.  Time will tell as to what will happen.

We have a brief meeting at school on Friday to see their point of view on the new class change and how Oliver is coping with it, so we will have to wait and see but so far so good.

Also for the first time Oliver attended Homework (prep club) After school with his sister this evening and even tho he had no homework or phonics he had reading to do and they both seamed to enjoy it and wand me to work late again so they can go again which is great. Normally with after school clubs I am collecting Oliver’s sister so I still go in and collect his bags from him and make sure he has everything but this time he had no one there which is what I think worried him a little but it went well.

Oliver now has a reminder in his desk of everything he needs to remember to bring home, It used to be I would go through his bag and send him back in for things which he would forget some if you gave him to much to remember.   But now he remembers as he has a list in his desk which he ticks things off once we has put them in his bag.  I have still be checking his bag which soon I can stop doing as the list is working and also making Oliver more independent.  Which is always a good thing 🙂
